Fall 2010 Anime Season Final Impressions

Finally time to wrap up the Fall 2010 Anime Season. While the season itself was a slight improvement over Summer 2010, it was still rather lacking in notable titles (by that I mean the quantity, not quality, of said titles). Nevertheless, here are several highlights from the past season.

Highlights:

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt

  • One Word: FUCK
  • Favorite Character: Rock Briefers
  • Favorite Episode: 6

Definitely my favorite show from the season and quite possibly GAINAX’s best since Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi of TTGL and FLCL fame, the show does not ease up on the craziness and over-the-top action one bit. Like the Python Troupe’s Meaning of Life call to arms, this show will offend its fair share of people. Nevertheless, it offers a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant season.

Arakawa Under the Bridge x Bridge

  • One Word: HIMO~
  • Favorite Character: Recruit
  • Favorite Episode: undecided

Not as great as the first season, but still funny and entertaining. It features all the great things that made the first season such a joy to watch. The spectacular cast is expanded upon in the second season as Recruit continues to adapt to life under the bridge. My favorite series from SHAFT thus far, edging out both Bakemonogatari and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

Kuragehime

  • One Word: Jelly
  • Favorite Character: Kiraboshi geezer
  • Favorite Episode: 11

The sleeper hit of the season. Kuragehime is geared more towards older audiences, particularly that of older women (and perhaps fujoshi?). Still, I enjoyed this series. It reminded me a lot of Genshiken in the way it depicted not just otaku, but normal social recluses in Japanese society. A decent mixture of comedy and slice-of-life. Featured a great soundtrack as well. LOVE IS COMING BACK~

Shiki

  • One Word: Oshi-
  • Favorite Character: Dat Doctor
  • Favorite Episode: undecided

The first 2-season show from noitaminA, coinciding with their recent switch to a full-hour timeslot. It’s a show that poses several questions to the viewer as they were watching the events unfold such as the morality behind the choices made. A great horror/thriller series that kept me wanting to watch more.

Otome Youkai Zakuro

  • One Word: ???
  • Favorite Character(s): Twins
  • Favorite Episode: undecided

Out of several JC Staff series airing this season, this was the only one I found remotely interesting. A blend of drama, slice of life, and shoujo in setting reminiscent of the imperialist expansion days of yester-century. A decent shoujo-esque story that takes themes from classic Japanese youkai folklore and foreign intrusion.

Guilty Pleasures:

  • Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru – An interesting and quirky show from SHAFT who was obviously rolling in the budget money from Bakemonogatari. Not a great show by any means, but a decent watch. Also, dat voice.
  • Shinryaku! Ika Musume – A pure comedy series, of which you don’t see many of these days. I watched it for the mini-ika. Sue me.
